Indexing Wittgenstein
Truly: to know a work it is only necessary to have a thorough knowledge of the index.
I remember a Wittgenstein lecturer at Leeds saying how life was transformed after the Philosophical Investigations was republished with an index (the third edition, 1967).
Why read the whole thing when you’ve got an index which includes entries like ‘beetle‘, ‘how do you know that you believe?’, ‘chess, translated into yells and stamping’, etc. I think the indexers (Anscombe, Rhees and von Wright) must have loved that text.
