World at six billion
October 12, 1999: the day the UN declared that the Earth’s population had passed six billion. Also, the day I discovered there was a difference between a UK and a U.S. billion.
The population of my world collapsed like pricked balloon. And the significance of the “historic milestone” was lost.
The sub-editors’ desk sums up the issue perfectly: “We’ve lost. Don’t fight it. It’s a thousand million.”
